Winona Laura Horowitz professionally known as Winona Ryder was born in Winona Minnesota. The parents of Winona Ryder gave her the name of her hometown. Michel Horowitz' father was an author and editor and editor, as was Cynthia Palmer and her mother. Ryder is a Jew. Ryder believes that her father came from an ethnically Jewish family. The actress is the younger sister of Uria, and has half-siblings Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder's parents relocated her and their children in Mendocino County California when Ryder reached seven. The family didn't have electricity. Ryder was a prolific reader because of the lack of television. Ryder started taking acting classes at the American Conservatory Theatre when she turned 12 years old. When she was fifteen, she landed her very first role on the screen in Lucas. Ryder endured bullying while in highschool. Her hope was that acting could bring change. Unfortunately that didn't come to pass. The actress continued to chase her dreams. Ryder made her breakthrough with Tim Burton's Beetlejuice in the year 1988. Ryder was able to continue playing characters that made a splash in several movies. In 1993 she received two nominations to win Academy Awards. One of the nominations was for her part In The Age of Innocence.
